A choral festival is being held in the Oxford Terrace Church to-night by the combined Baptist choirs. ' Tenders are invited for the delivery pf supplies'and forage 1 to the troopship Verdala at Port Chalmers.
The Rev. R. B. S. Hammond, of Sydney, will give his first address on "The War on Liquor" at the Oddfellows' Hall, at Woolston, tomorrow evening, at 8 o'clock.
To-night., at 8.30/ Messrs Arthur Withy and J.; Miles Verrail will conduct a debate at the Alexandra Hall on the subject, "Is the Single Tax the Best and Most Just Method"'?'' or '/How to! Pay for the War- and Raise. Public Revenues generally." . . Owing to the large quantity of cargo to work at Lytteltori, it' has been found necessary to postpone "the departure of the Moeraki, for Sydney and Hobart, via Wellington, until to-morrow after the arrival of the 2.45 p.m. -train.
The exhibition of pictures by MiArchibald Nicoli, " the young Christchurch artist who has had such success in England, will be continued until tomorrow evening.- The - exhibition, which isr being held'in Mr W. E. Simes's rooms, 144 Hereford Street, contains work of very high quality which should not be missed by those who appreciate artistic achievement. Admission is free to the display, which will be open i from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from 7 p.m. i to 9.30 p.m. Probates were granted in the ca?es of the following deceased persons by his Honour Mr Justice Denniston in Chambers at Wellington on Thursday, October 21: —Helena Marsh (Mr Salter), Ann Pearce (Mr Flesher), Margaret Lambie (Mr Cuningham), Francis Mac bin (Mr Weston), Alfred A. Ransley (Mr Hunt), James Hoban (Mr Hoban), William Reed (Mr Wilding), Andrew McGill (Mr Hunt), George Easterbrook (Mr Hunt), Thomas George King (Mr Hunt), and William Henry French (Mr Hunt). A -meeting of ladies was held this morn: ing at Nazareth House to decide what steps should be taken to assist the nuns in carrying out the various charities. Lady Clifford occupied the chair. As was pointed out at the meeting, local charities"had", been hard hit in the way of financial support by the war, ■ which at vamt time made all the greater claim on their activities. It was decided to hold a concert in the Theatre Royal on December 8, the arrangements to be made by Miss M. Hayward. Lady Clifford consented to act as president of the committee in connection with the matter, and Mrs S. Barnett as honorary secretary. Tickets were distributed amongst the ladies present, who agreed to use their best endeavours to effect the sale of them. Mis-s Hayward stated that an excellent programme of vocal and instrumental music was being arranged, and, particulars will be announced later. The ladies present were entertained at morning tea by the Eev. Mother.
At the organ recital to be given in His Majesty '* Theatre at 8130 p.m. .on Sunday next, Dr. Bradsha'w (City Organist) will play a programme of music by Belgian, composers, as follows: — The Belgian Hymn; Andante con moto, Orlando di Lassus (born at Moris); Ave Maria, Arcadelt (born in Brabant); Prelude, Fugue, and Variation, Cesar Franck (born at Liege); (a) Grand Fantasia, "The Storm" (by request), (b) Allegretto in B flat, and (c) Triumphal March, Lemmens (late organist to the King of the Belgians a"n.d Professor of the Organ at Brussels Conservatoire of : Music); (a) Cantilene, (b) Communion, and (c) Toccata (Op. 23), Joseph Cal-, laerts (organist of Antwerp Cathedral and Professor of- the Organ at the Royal Conservatoire at Antwerp); Romance, Op. 40 for tho violin, Henri Vieuxtemps (born at Verviers, late Professor of the" Violin at' Brussels Conservatoire); Chceur in E flat, No. 1, P. C. F. van Den Bogaert.
