MEETING OF THE SYNOD. LAST EVENING'S BUSINESS. The Christchurch Diocesan Synod continued its sittings last evening, the Very Rev: Bishop Julius presiding, f The President read a resolution passed at a meeting of members of the C.E.M.S. and churchmen that Synod be urged to develop better measures for Bible Class work among young men and lads. (MILITARY CHAPLAINS. Mr H. D. Andrews moved:—''That, in accordance with the recommendation of the standing committee, the Church Property Trustees be authorised and. requested to place at the disposal of the Bishop a sum not exceeding £l5O from the surplus revenue of the Bishopric Estate, to be applied in making provision, by means of persons appointed by the Bishop as diocesan officers for that purpose, for the Sunday and week-day duties of any of the clei'gy required for military service either in or out of New Zealand during the war, in the case of whom the Bishop deems it desirable that such provision should b,e made." This was carried. ■ ST. JOHN PARISH. . Mr T. W. Rowe moved: —"That the Church Property Trustees be authorised to apply the income arising from the invested balance of the proceeds of the sale of the school reserve in'the parish of St. John the Baptist, in Christchurch, so far as may be necessary, -to the payment at the due dates of the quarterly instalments of principal and interest on the parochial loan | of £7OO for ten years granted to the said parish; such application thereof to be made during the whole currency of the loan. Provided that the amount of any insufficiency of the proceeds for the purpose indicated be a liability upon the parish, payable quarterly.'' This was carried. ST. SAVIOUR'S ORPHANAGE.
Arising out of the visit of members to St. Saviour's Orphanage, Dean Carrington moved that the Synod strongly urge upon every parish and every individual member" of the Church in the diocese the duty of supporting the efforts of St. Saviour's Guild to extend its work of providing for orphan and destitute children.
The mover said it was proposed to set up a small committee" of the Synod to meet the council of St. Saviour's Guild and discuss ways and means of doing the work. This motion was carried and a committee comprising Dean Carrington, Archdeacon Jacob, Rev. F. P. Fendall, and Messrs C. Hastings Bridge, R. W. Simpson, and H. M. Bannehr, was set up to confer with the council of the St. Saviour's Guild. CATHEDRAL REPAIRS.
It was decided, on the motion of Bishop Julius: —"That, subject to the payment of the primary statutory charges and of the annual interest and sinking fuud on the Cathedral completion loan, and of the sinking fund to repay the capital advanced towards the liquidation of the English loan, it be a recommendation to the Church Property Trustees to pay to the Cathedral Chapter from the revenue of the dean and chapter estate, the sum of £209 10/5 for re-ha'nging bells, repairs to fabric, and improvement of precincts; £76 17/4 to cover the debit balance of the maintenance fund, July :il, 1914; and £250 as a subsidy towards the maintenance of services during the year 1914-15. " MOTIONS OF SYMPATHY.
On the motion of Archdeacon Gosset the Synod resolved to place on record its sense of loss by the death of the Ven. Archdeacon H. G. Gould, late of Dunedin, and its appreciation of his good and faithful service. It was directed that a cppy of the resolution bo forwarded to Mrs Gould and her children.
It was decided, on the motion of Mr H. D. Andrews, that the Synod record its appreciation of the services of the late Mr Win. Alexander Day, synodsmau for St. Luke's, CliristchurcL
AKABOA VICAEAGE. It was decided, on the motion of the Be v. A. H. Julius:—-"That authority be given to /the Church Property Trustees to pay out of the proceeds of the sale of the old Akaroa vicarage and site the sum of £62 10/- deposit and interest on same on the purchase of the new vicarage site, .and the ;Sum of £7B rent of house for the yiear during the building of the new vicarage. That the resolutions passed in 1911 in reference to the Akaroa Glebe be modified so fas' to give effect to the foregoing resolution." ' EAKAIA VICABAGE. The Bev. H.N. Wright moved:— "That, at the request of the vestry of the B&kaia parish; the Synod authorises the. Church Property Trustees to sell the present vicarage and glebe of 10 acres at Eakaia and'to apply the proceeds of such sale, in the manner following: (a) To pay the cost of a section of land of one acre near St. Mark's Church in the Eakaia township; (b) to pay the cost of the erection of; a vicarage in substantial materials to' be built upon the same section, the plans and materials to be submitted for the approval of the Standing Committee; (e) to pay the cost i>f the necesisary fencing and, putting in order the, new ground.".
