Sir Rupert Clarke and Mr E. G. Clarke are staying at Temuka during the fishing season.

Messrs Charles Jensen (Sydney), and H. G. Edwards (Wellington) arrived in town this morning. They are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. -

A cablegram from Cape Town states that Sir.. J. Rose has been appointed Chief Justice of South Africa, in succession to the late Lord de Villiers. .

Visitors to Christchureh staying at the United Service Hotel include Messrs A. Rowlands (Auckland), Norman Heates (Auckland), and F. Duncan (Dunedin).

The New Zealand Government astronomer, Mr C. E Adams, has been advised that he has been elected a member of the Astronomical and Astrophysical Society of America.

News has been received that Mr R. Boyne, postmaster at Woodville, who entered the Post and Telegraph Department in 1874, will retire on superannuation at the end of the year. Mr W. H. Gould has tendered his resignation of the position of principal of the Native College and Director of Education at Nukualofa, Tonga. He was at one time on the staff of the Te Aro School, Wellington. , Mr James Mitchell, managing director of Beath :nd Co., Ltd., who has been on a trij> to England, is returning by the R.M.S. Makura. A wireless message received from Mr Mitchell today intimates that the vessel will reach Auckland this evening fom Vancouver.

Mir F. W. Nicholson has arrived in Wellington to take up the position of general manager of the National Mutual Life Association, a position so long occupied by the late Mr Orton Stevens. Mi- Nicholson, who has been connected with life assurance for over 39 years, has been attached to the Sydney office for the last 27 years.
