GERMAN FORCE OUTWITTED.
GUNS HIDDEN IN CAVES. PLATFORMS EIGHTEEN MONTHS OLD. (Received October 19, 8.50 a.m.) PARIS, October 18. During the recent fighting southward of Arras, British forces posted on the declivity from a hill, were suddenly exposed to a murderous artillery and ride fire from Germans concealed on an opposite hillside. The British were ordered to retire. Thereupon a strong body of German infantry advanced against the British. The latter's reserves emerged from cover, and moved diagonally across the valley. Simultaneously, cavalry advanced. The two forces converged, with infantrymen holding to the stirrupleathers of the cavalry. Both charged the Germans, and swept them beyond the positions which they had been holding.
• British artillery compelled the Germans to abandon caves in the hillsides, where their guns had been cleverly hidden. The guns were abandoned by the Germans after they had been made useless. Examination showed that the guns were mounted on concrete platforms which had been constructed at least eighteen months before.
