DEBATING SOCIETY.
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. The Debating Society held a very successful evening on Saturday on the occasion of their presentation of prizes. i The function, which was accompanied !by an excellent programme of songs, recitations, and musical items, was witnessed by a large number . of people. Items were contributed by the following:—Messrs Mason, Bosworth> Wright, Ambler, Olds, Malcolm, Harrington, Bailey, and Cade, and Misses Skelton, Higgins, and Ecroyd, and Miss Snell's orchestra. In presenting the prizes, Mr F. L. Anderson, president of the society, congratulated the winners, and hoped that they would maintain their efficiency throughout the ensuing year. The following is a list of the prize winners:— Y.M.C.A. Club—Messrs W. J. Mason, H. R. Plimsoll, J. M. Telford, A. Hold'en, W. Hobbs, P. J. Hulston, W. Bascand, C. Voss, and W. T. Wilson. St. Paul's —Misses R. E. Burn, E. Burn, H. B. Robertson, R. L. Dearsley, I. W. Best, M; R. Robertson, and V. E. Lyons, and Messrs R. A. McKay, L. Quartermain, J. Stout, N. Proctor, T. W. Reese, and W. M'Kay. Technical College—Misses M. Higgins, E. White, E. Devereux, and Messrs D. Rutherford, V. A. Rule, and F. N. Ambler. 'Varsity—Messrs H. G. Bell, A. O. Ponder, A. R. Lawry, and A. K. Rule. Knox—Messrs R. Torrance, W. Goss, and A. Roberts. Heathcote — Mrs A. Connal and Mr J. E. Doolan. Trinity—Mr A. W. Judge. Rugby—Mrs W. Hindle. The Champion Challenge Shield was. won by the Y.M.C.A. Club, with a total of 61 points, there being 5 firsts, 6 seconds, and 4 thirds. * The second place was secured' by the St. Paul's- Club with 4 firsts, 4 seconds, and 5 thirds, making a total of 59 points. The Technical College Club put up the best performance, but only attain- ! eil third place on account of the small number of entries. Their average was 7 firsts, 5 seconds, and 4 thirds, making i a total of 51J points. Each club received a framed certificate. The two debating judges (Messrs R.-j Malcolm aud J. Caughley). were presented with framed photos of the executive as a slight token of the in- j valuable services they had rendered in I the competitions. The recipients suitably responded.
