NEW BRIGHTON SURF CLUB.
The annual report of the New Brighton Surf Club which is to be presented at the annual meeting on Thursday, October 22, shows that the 1913-14 season closed with a club membership of 390, haA'ing commenced with only 164. Regret was expressed for the deaths of Messrs R. Vincent and T. W. Edmonds, whose services the committee wish to place on record. On all holidays and Sundays patrols have been told off for duty, and as a result of this training a inimber of members qualified for the proficiency certificate and medallion from the Royal Life-Saving Society, forty-four having passed the tests. On a number of occasions members have been instrumental in saving life during the season at New Brighton and elsewhere. The debt on the pavilion is being removed, £B4 9/- having been collected and subscribed for this purpose during the season. It is suggested that an entrance fee of 5/- be charged for new members, in addition to the usual subscription of 5/-. The control of a portion of the foreshore, including a special area set apart for bathing purposes, is now vested in the club by powers delegated from the New Brighton Borough Council, and upon all holidays and iluring the whole of each Sunday during the bathing season, the special constables have absolute- control of the foreshore in the matter of the conduct of the public, either when bathing or otherwise. The balance-sheet shows receipts amounting to £506 6/5, expenditure £494 1/-, assets £433 3/5, and liabilities £lO3 ,!»/-.
