The cruiser Leipzic has sunk the steamer Bankfields with half a million dollars' worth of sugar aboard. The crew were landed at Callao. (Received October 3, 11.40 a.m.) FREMANTLE, October 3. Some anxiety is being felt in regard to the steamer Clan Macmillan, which is three weeks' overdue from the Tyne. [The Bankfields is a steamer of 3763 tons, built in 1905, and owned by the Bank Shipping Co., Ltd. The Clan Macmillan is one of the well-known Clan liners. She is of 4525 tons burden and practically a sister ship to the Clan Matheson, sunk by the cruiser Emden recently.]

Sir Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett added to his letter as follows: — "The French forces are now at Peronne, and unless their progress is checked the Germans will be faced with the problem of withdrawing huge masses of disheartened and weary troops to Germany." FIJI TO AUSTRALIA. WAR RISKS ADVANCED. QUEENSLAND BUSH CONTINGENT (Received October 3, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, October 3. War risks on vessels trading between Australia and Fiji have been advanced from 1 to 2 per cent. Rabbit trappers have contributed 24,000 rabbits to the value of £BOO, to the War Food Fund, which now totals £52,000, and the Belgianl Fund £41,546. The "Herald" states that some of the seized wheat has been sold by the Government at 4/2 and has been resold at 5/3, the seller taking the point that it was sold as chickwheat, which has not been proclaimed. Reuter's Constantinoiple correspondent reports angry quarrels between the German and Turkish authorities. - The Germans complained of the idleness, lack of discipline, and disorganisation of the w;ar services, whereupon many Turkish chiefs of departments, including the commissariat, refused to cooperate any further with the Germans.
