GERMAN FORCE SURROUNDED. FRENCH DEMAND SURRENDER. (Received October 2, 8.45 a.m.) PARIS, October 1. The fight proceeding in one region on the Allies' left resembles Paardeberg. There are 3500 Germans in the same plight as Cronje ? s army, although they are not in a\ river-bed, like the latter's men, but in quarries. French troops have completely surrounded them, and are shelling them in order to compel, their surrender. [The capitulation of General Cronje, which occurred on February 27, 1900, was due to an enveloping movement of the British forces under General French. Cronje was investing Kimberley when the troops under General Freneh made their march on that town, and recognise ing his danger of being surrounded, the Boer general made : a dash eastwards towards but troops under.'; General Kelly -Kenny caught up with, the ;matn body of the enemy, and kept up a running fight, till at last Cronje i was headed off, and brought to a halt at Paardeberg, .where he took up the defensive in the bed of the Modder River. B/ut being; surrounded, he found the position untenable, there being no means of retreat, and he capitulated with 4000 men.] •
