The tourist season in New Zealand will receive a setback on account of the war, as far as overseas' visitors are concerned. It is comforting to record that' the returns of New Zealand travelling on* tourist routes and to tourist resorts are keeping up, and that, as far as the Christchurch office is concerned, they are above the figures for the corresponding period of last year, Mr Donald Simson, of Johannesburg, a - member of a well-known Auckland family and chairman of the Rand Water Board, was in Germany in July on the board's business, and left just before the outbreak of the war. On reaching London he volunteered for service at the front and has been given a commission with captain's rank in a eavalry regiment. Mr Bimson wae a private in the Bth New Zealand South African Contingent, and also acted as dispatch rider for Colonel Thorneycroift.
