A MOTOR SMASH.
A DOCTOR CONCERNED.
The circumstances of a motor smash on the Papanui Road were brought to light at the Court .this morning, when Dr Jessie G. Maddison {Mr Beswick and Mr Hunter) appeared to answer to the charge of having failed to stop after an accident had happened to John Stephens, 'and also for having driven along Papanui Road at a dangerous speed. John Stephens, of Amberley, said that he was going along Leinster Road on his motor cycle at a speed of from four to five miles an hour, when he came into Papanui Road. The car was coming along the road without any warning. He struck the car about the footboard and was thrown over. Two gentlemen attended to him, and Dr Orchard was called. He had stitches put in his cheek and the back of his head. He estimated the speed of the ear at 20"miles an hour. • Evidence was given that Dr Maddison was going at 20 miles an hour, but this was denied by the defendant. It was also asserted that the doctor had failed to ascertain whether any physical harm had come to Stephens, and this state-' ment was' Controverted also,' the doctor stating that enquiries had been made.
The Bench, after retiring to consider the matter, returned to state that neither, the car nor the motor cycle wqre driving at excessive speed, and the matter could only be called an accident. There had perhaps been a little want of thought on the part of the doctor in not finding out whether the man was hurt or not. The charges were dismissed.
