TURF TOPICS.
Many of the early workers at Riccarton are availing themselves of the opportunity afforded to commence training operations in the early morning. As from September 1 the training tracks at headquarters are thrown open at 6 a.m. until the end of the month, after which proceedings will start an hour earlier, and continue on all through the summer months. The veteran trainer, E. Cutts, was the first to break the ice, his example having since been followed by a number of others. v The Riccarton trainer, W. Bush, lias had the Finland —De Murska gelding Baritone placed under his care to prepare for future engagements. E. Cutts has recommissioned, after a short respite, the Treadmill horse Stevedore, who has been on the easy list since racing at the National meeting. The rest has evidently proved very beneficial, as /N lie has put on a considerable amount of 'flesh, and has thrown off most of the which was the cause of his temporary retirement. Encore has been treated 1 to a dose of physic, and will be given a few days' rest, after which "he is to be prepared for events at the November fixture. Chrysotis is another that is enjoying a let-up, the daughter of. St. Ambrose feeling the effects of her Ashburton exertion. She is to resume work again shortly. All hope of winning a»race with the unreliable but speedy Soult gelding Aim•well has apparently not been abandoned, as he is a regular attendant on the tracks at headquarters, and is at present very much on the big side. R. Longley has commenced to introduce his latest addition, the Birkenhead horse Banian, daily to the tracks at headquarters. When he first joined Longley's active brigade Banian appeared, to have done his full share of hard work. He has been spelling since the National meeting, and the rest has worked wonders in him, and he looks in good fettle now to commence a preparation. He is a big, upstanding customer, and one that should make a useful hurdler. The name* of May Pallas has been claimed for the Winton Guineas candidate by Pallas from Lady May, while the gelded son of De la Rey and Dolly will race as De la Reve. The speedy pacer Maelstrom, by Wildwood from Mist Poole has finished
her racing career, and will join Mr Friedlander's stud at Ashburton. Expect still rules as first favourite for the New Zealand Cup, while Sinapis, Sea Pink, La Reina, Warstep, Football and Hvettus are next in demand. A final payment for the Avondale Cup niust be made good by Wednesday next. Mr J. B. Reid has disposed of Sainiel and Salzburg. The former, who got on the winning list at Ashburton, is now the property of Mr J. C. N. Grigg, while Salzburg has gone into J. Ruttledge's stable at Wingatui. • The Multifid—Manutuke horse Sir Daniel, who raced consistently last season, died recently from lockjaw at the farm of his breeder, Mr J. Robson. Mr T. H. Lowry will probably be represented in the Wanganui Cup by both Balboa and Campeddor, th-3 untried son of Charlemagne 11. and Neva. Being -a half-brother to Danube, great deeds are expected of the latter, who is a particularly fine galloper. After a lengthy spell, during which he was gelded, Glenowl is to be put into work again in the course of a few days. At present the son of Glenapp is being hacked about the roads. The New Zealand Cup candidate Columbus has four seconds to his credit, but has not as yet managed to catch the judge's eye. Three prominent New Zealand Cup candidates in Merry Roe, Bleriot, antf Koyal Arms, are likely to be seen under silk in the Avondale Cup on Wednesday next. Should Merry Roe prevail she will not .be penalised for the big November event as she is already set to carry more than weight for age, but a victory for Bleriot or Royal Arms would entail 101b extra for the New Zealand Cup. After being off the scene since last January, Derrmgcotte has been taken up again by J. Tasker. At present the veteran son of Prince Imperial looks decidedly in 'the rough. Since racing at the August meeting, Te Kuiti and his stable companion, Mayflower, have been having an easy time of it, but they will both be got ready for the November meeting. Subsequent to the August meeting, Franz Josef changed trainers and is now a member of McDermott. 's team.
