Captain Beaumont was one of last night's passengers foe the north. Mr Justice Denniston leaves for Wellington this evening en route to Napier. Mr N. Heath, of Auckland, arrived in town this morning, and is staying at the" United Service Hotel. Captain. J. Bone, Marine Superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company, left for Wellington last evening. Mr Brisbane Doyle died in Auckland a few days ago from heart disease. He was well known in New Zealand as a j theatrical agent. Mr H. Chadwick, late manager of the Opera liouse on the Brennan-Fuller circuit, left town last evening for Wellington, en route to Sydney. Professors Ely, of the Wisconsin University, United States, Franklin, of the Stanford University, California, B. Hobson, of Sheffield, and M. M. Allorge, of Paris, arrived in Christclmrch this morning. They are staying alt the Clarendon Hotel. From Sydnev is announced the death of Mrs Charbonnct-Kellerman, mother j of the famous swimmer, Miss Annette! Kellerman. The deceased lady toured New Zealand in the eighties as a vocalist, under the name of Miss Alice Charbonnet. 1 Mr Alfred Richmond,/ folicitor, of Feilding, who died a-few days ago, was a son of the late Mr Justice Richmond. He took a prominent part in the public affairs of Feilding, and was elected to; the Borough Council in 1903, and held j the seat Vuntil the time of his death, j He was ex-president of the local A. & P. j Association and of the Law Society in i his town, and was president of the! Choral Society and the Orchestral So-j ciety. " I
The Hon. J. Allen, Minister of Defence, who went to Dunedin by the first express yesterday morning, returns to Christchurch this evening. Accompanied by the Mayor, he will inspect the Sockburn camp on Monday, and will leave.at midday for Ashburton, where he will lay the foundaton stone of an hostel. He will return to Christchurch the same day, and leave for Wellington in the evening.
Mr H. Blakely, who for the last 23 years has been connected with the firm of Messrs Smith and Caughey, Ltd., of Auckland (for the past eight years as manager) has been appointed to the Christchurch D.I.C. as assistant manager. Mr Blakely, when leaving Auckland, was presented with numerous tokens of esteem. The directors of the firm gave a very handsome gold watch, suitably inscribed, and from the staff he received a valuable collection of silverware and a gold sovereign case, and an oak barometer from the St. John's Methodist Sunday School.
