SOUTH WIN.

INTER-ISLAND HOCKEY. Press Association. WELLINGTON, September 12. The North Island met the South Island at hockey to-day, in the presence of about two thousand spectators. Clean long stick work characterised the opening stages, which were slightly in favour of the South. By dint of snappy passing the latter »oon had the North backs defending. Play was momentarily transferred to the opposite end, but soon the South were again hotly attacking. South succeeded in getting into the circle, and from a beautiful position, within a few yards of the goal, Byeburn scored. The ball had only been in motion again a few moments when another beautifully executed move on the part of the Southerners was seen. The second goal was tlie result of a stinging shot by Patriek. Incensed by the unexpected reverse the North now took a hand, and concentrated a vigorous attack on the Southerners quarters. Loader coming up, sent in a wonderful shot. South 2, North 1. The play following was full of incident, both teams apparently settling down to the game.
