COUNTRY NEWS.
(From Our Special Correspondents.) SWANNANOA. A most successful patriotic concert was held in the district hall at Swanminoa on Friday evening, when £7 8/-5 was secured for the Britain-Belgian relief fund. Much enthusiasm was displayed as the various patriotic items were rendered. The contributors- were the school children, with drill and songs, Mrs Coote, Miss Molly Coote, Mrs Morton, Miss Gardiner,. Messrs Lindsay, Struthers, G. Ironsides, N. Wright; solos and a piano duet by Miss Gardiner and Mrs Winter. The ladies dispensed supper, and dancing was enjoyed for a few hours. The promoters .were Mrs H. Winter an,d Mr Lindsay. MALVERN. The annual meeting of frie Malvern Saleyards Company was held ih<» the Road Board's office, Sheffield, on Saturday night. The report and balancesheet were considered very satisfactory, and the following were elected directors for the ensuing year:—Messrs McMillan (chairman), F. W. Compton, H. Neittze, J. R. Cullen, J.*Jebson,,G. H. Judd, and A. W. Adams. Mr F. Willis was appointed caretaker. It was decided to give £2O to Ukb Poor of Britain Fund, and a further £3O, if necessary, to relieve distress in New Zealand. DUNSANDEL. The fourth Band of Hope meeting of this season was held in the hall on Friday night, Mr G. Sheat. presiding over a large and appreciative audience. The Rev. Gregg gave an interesting address. The annual meeting of the Dunsandel Tennis Club was held in the Library on Saturday night. Mr C. A. Wright' presided over a small attendance. The bal-. ance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2 17/4. The handicap tournament for gentlemen, prize a cup, presented by Mr C. A. C. Hardy, was won by Mr John Walker; and the lady's prize, valued at £1 1/-, ami presented by the club, wks won by Mrs H. McMillan. The following officers were elected for- the ensuing year:—Patrons, Hon. C A. C. Hardy and Hqh. K. H. Rhodes, M.P.'s.; president, Mr J. S. Boag; vice-presidents, Messrs T. Irvine, P. Delargey, and D. j W. Westenra; captain, Mr C. A. Wright; vice-captain, Mr John Walker; hon. I secretary and treasurer, Mr H. W. Johnson; general committee, Mesdames C. Wright and Delargey,'Miss Kolls, Messrs C. A. Wright, John Walker, F. E. Owers and H. W, Johnson. y ~ The secretary was instructed to'write to the Leeston and Southbridge clubs, witli a view of holding a district tournament this season. A hearty vote of th'aftks-was accorded to the captain and secretary for their past services.
