KAIAPOI.

At a meeting "of the Kaiapoi Borough Council, held last evening, ( there were present: the Mayor (Mr J. W. Bernard) and Crs Rinaldi, Garnett, Robb. Revell, and Williams. . The receipts for the fortnight "were £3B 14/4; and the overdraft was returned as £1294. ■ ' ■ •■ The lamplighter applied for a refund of the cost of a new bicycle. This was 'referred to the Lighting Committee. Extension of time was granted the Fire Prevention Committee to report on the proposal for establishing • a Fire Board. PROPOSED' SALEYARDS. A letter was read from Mr Leicester Matson asking what attitude would be taken by the council towards a firm brave enough to acquire land at the railway

depot for the express purpose of starting a realisation centre. '("A'''.'councillor said thai; he meant a saleyard.) It 1 was stated that there no reason Kaiapoi should not be a senior of Canterbury with its water frontage, proximity to the freezing works, and its important railway terminus. Enquiry was induced because, unless there was a bona fide undertaking that no ridiculous and preposterous bylaw, .would impose an embargo, no firm could venture upon so" great an enterprise for" a period of, say, 25 years. This was looking well .ahead, but. times ha'd been so good with the" Eahgibra ratepayers that now the agricultural and pastoral" community were as'T nothing to them. They wanted to cause the removal of their yards in the near future. Several attempts had been made ; and. shortly it looked as if stock sales woulji be impossible. Trade would leave Earigiora, and, coupled with the proposal to close" the- Addington yards, these places would be left to their respectability and loss.

•Before a definite answer was given the council decided to ask for a conference with Mr Matson.
