LADIES' HOCKEY.
WAIRARAPA t. CANTERBURY.
A match between the representative teams of the Canterbury ami Wairarapa Ladies' Hockey Associations was played at the polo grounds, South Hagley Park on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, a strong nor'-wester blew across the ground, making the conditions unpleasant for the spectators. It was a fast and exciting game. The Wairarapa girls—a speedy and young team—had the better of the first
spell, their hard hitting. upsetting the Canterbury team's play. But in the second spell the Canterbury girls improved in combination and tactics, and they managed to secure a narrow victory. The teams were:— "
Wairarapa.—Goal, I. Ordish; right back, N. Humphries;left, R. Humphries; halves, right R. Bansby, centre F. Sage, left N. Feast; forwards, R. Neilson, B. Orr, 0. Grigg, I. Knowles, G.Humphries. Canterbury.—Goal, E. Cade; right back, D. Pearee; left back,'M. Wells; halves, M. Sandman, O. Smith, E. Nightingale; forwards, I. Taylor, S. Kruae, P. Pearee, M. Pearee, L Burnip. The Wairarapa forwards soon took command, and pressed the red and blacks. A corner hit gave the visitors a chance, but bad shooting nullified their efforts. AVairarapa still attacked; but the ball was reaching the side lines too frequently. A Canterbury rally, and the Misses Pearee.and Miss Kruse instituted an attack on the Wairarapa goal. But they were not in the circle for more than a moment or two. A little later the Misses Pearee were prominent in auother unsuccessful attack. The Canterbury girls "were improving, but their shooting was ill-directed and weak. Miss Taylor brought the ball down to the Wairarapa circle again, tmt Miss Kruse's shot went a foot or so wide ef the net.
For a while it was a case of turn and turn about at attacking. At length, however, Wairarapa set up a good attack from a penalty hit for obstruction, and Miss I. Knowles put the ball into the net. Less than a minute later Miss Grigg scored a second goal for Wairarapa. After a period of defence the Canterbury forwards came down the field, but Miss Sage stopped them in the circle. Back came the red and blacks, and Miss P. Pearce had a couple of shots that narrowly missed the net. Just on half-time the Canterbury forwards came down with a good rush and Miss M. Pearce put in a good, hard shot that the visitors' goal-keeper was unable to stop. Wairarapa -, Canterbury 1. Immediately after, the second spell opened the Canterbury forwards took the ball down to the* Wairarapa goal mouth, and in a melee there the ball rolled under one of the goalkeeper's feet into the net, equalising the scores. But very soon the Wairarapa girls were in the lead again, a splendid shot by Miss Neilson banging into the net. For a time the play was right down at Wairarapa's end/the ball passing across just in front of the goal-mouth three or four times. Presently Miss M. Pearce found the net with Canterbury's third goal. From a corner hit a little later Miss S. Kruse put in a shot that gave Canterbury the lead. ,The_r-eu""ani blacks were now. overrunning the visi-
tors.___. Miss P7 Pearce shot the fiftJ goal. Miss Neilson scored for Waira rapa. The game ended with the scores: Canterbury .. 5 Wairarapa 4
