SUMNER.
I ACCIDENT TO MOTOR BOAT. ] A striking illustration of 'the necesj sity of having a pilot stationed at ; Sumner occurred yesterday afternoon. Shortly after two o'clock two young men endeavoured to negotiate the Sumner bar in a motor boat while a fairly heavy sea was running. When well on the bar two huge rollers struek the boat, the second one breaking right overboard and stopping the engine. The occupants were soon in a perilous position owing to the boat being at the mercy of the breakers. Their position was noticed from the shore, and the lifeboat was soon launched with a crew consisting of F. Kerr, R. Gibbs, A. Beardsley, and L. Harley, with J. Cairns in charge. The lifeboat reached the motor boat and took the occupants, one of whom was in a very exhausted condition, on board. The motor boat was afterwards towed to the boat harbour.
