To-day's cables contain the announcement that a strong force of British marines have been landed at Ostend, in Belgium, and have Occupied the town and surrounding district. Mines in the North Sea have been responsible for the destruction of ■3b Norwegian steamer and a Danish trawler, the latter not far from the English ccf&st. The British cruiser Highflyer exchanged shots with and sank the German armed merchantman, Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, off the West Coast of -Africa. *',• The Germans have also sustained a severe loss by the going ashore and subsequent blowing up of the cruiser, Madgeburg, in the Gulf of Finland. • Further details are also to hand of the fighting in Belgium, and General French has,, reported that the British have been (fighting splendidly against overwhelming odds. A big battle is said to be now raging on the Belgian frontier. The Russians have gained another striking success in their march eastward, having, occupied the important town of Tilsit.
