MOTORING.
CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. About thirty members attended the., annual meeting of the. Canterbury Automobile Association, held in the association's rooms last evening. . Dr W. H. Simpson presided. i The 'committee's report stated that the year started with a membership of 418. During the year '45 members had been struck off—some had resigned, and others had not paid their dues —and 82 new members had been elected, so that the membership now stood at 455, or a nett gain of ;>7.\ The year started with a cash balance of £l7 18/5. Receipts £625 5/-, making, with the balance brought forward, £642 i 5/5. The ' expenditure ' amounted to £486 9/7, a decrease in expenditure of £SB 2/6. This left a credit of £155 IU/10. The value of the assets had been increased by £35 12/6. During the year special attention had' been paid to the erection of sign posts, etc., and a uniform sign post had now been adopted. Several of these were being erected at various places. Thesewould come more into prominence during, the coming season, as 1 a liunderd had been ordered, for erection" at required points. Amongst other matters referred to in the report was that of motor taxation. It was stated that the executive had this under consideration, and every effort would be made to secure a fair and' equitable method of taxation. With regard to motor car insurance, several schemes had been discussed by
automobile . associations generally throughout New Zealand, and the Automobile Associations' Mutual Insurance Society, Ltd., was in course of- formation, the head office to be in Christchurch, with branches at principal associations. Concerning the question of - motor cars for the Expeditionary Forces, the committee thanked all members who had placed their cars at the disposal of the Government, and for their splendid response to the call for funds for the Association's Car Purchase Fund. The association had given £2OO for the purchase of. one car for aqtive servicte, of the type selected by the Government. A number of subscriptions had been received from members towards this donation, but a sum of about £6O was needed to make up the .balance required, and the committee trusted that those members who had not already 4 subscribed would do so. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. . - ' . Officers for the ensuing year we*e elected as Patron, his Excellency the Governor, Lord Liverpool; president, Mr # F. W. Johnston;* vicepresidents, Dr W. B, Simpson, I>r Louisson, and Messrs A. Morten and F. Hubbard; hon. treasurer, Mr W. Broadway; hon. auditor, Mr C. Allison; committee, Messrs P. E. Climie, A. S. Ciarkson, D. Crosier, H. E. Kennett, J. S. Hawkes, B. English, and. H. Piper. After considerable discussion-, .the committee was recommended to discontinue the use of the present rooms and make fresh arrangements. -It was also recommended to the committee 1 that the Defence authorities be approached with a view to putting the motor reserve upon a proper footing.
