At the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court this morning, before Air L. A. Stringer, J.P., John Patrick Kelly, charged with being helplessly drunk, was remanded for a week for medical treatment. ,A recently posted notice at Canterbury College states that the chairman of the Professorial Board invites applications for nomination as the College candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship to be sent in by September 1. A Press Association message from Wellington states that Horace Cramond, late Wellington manager for Tlios. Cook and Son, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment for the misappropriation of £I4OO, monies belonging to his employers. Those, who enjoy a scamper through a thrilling page of British history should go to the Oxford Terrace Church tonight. The Rev. J. J. North is to tell of the British in India, from Queen Bess to the Delhi Durbar. Mr Beardsley is showing 100 : specia!ly-prepared views. Admission is free. There will be a collection for the" Patriotic Fund. Six hundred seats will be provided. The lecture will commence at' 8 o 'clock.

Shortly after . 9 o'clock yesterday morning a fire .broke out in a fourroomed dwelling in Baker Street, New Brighton, owned and occupied by Mr Charles Barter. The outbreak originated in a washhouse attached to the main building. *Tlie Fire. Brigade attended with a small chemical engine, but its efforts were of no avail, and the building was ' destroyed completely. The house*was .insured for £175 in the Guardian office, and the furniture, part of which was saved, for £SO in the Northern office.

Mr C. W. Leadbeater, the well-known Theosophistj lectured to a large audience in the King's Theatre last night on '' The Life After Death.'' Mr Leadbeater ' reviewed the evidence concerning apparitions and* other supernatural phenomena, i: and gave some remarkable experiences 'that came within the scope of his own personal knowledge. He dealt with the principles of Theosophist belief, and stated that the trend of modern science was in a direction conformable with Theosophist tenets. At the close of last Sunday evening's service of the Lyttelton Methodist Church a large number of the congregation remained behind, and the following resolution, proposed by Mr J. Pitcaithly," and seconded by *Mr J. Page, was carried unanimously—' 1 That having heard the Rev. A. Mitchell's statement with regard to his volunteering for service with ' the Expeditionary Force, this meeting of the officials and congregation heartily approves of his action, and pledges itself to maintain services of -the Church in the highest degree of efficiency during his enforced absence." , -' •

The members of' the Canterbury Referees' Association held their annual re-union oil Saturday evening in the A 1 Hotel. Mr'H. E. Hiddlestone presided over an attendance of between 30 and 40 members and visitors. The Canterbury Rugby Union was represented by its President (Mr G. H. Mason), its three vice-presidents and several other members of the committee. After full justice had been done to an excellent dinner the toasts of '' The King,'' "The Canterbury Rugby Union," and "The Rugby Football Clubs in Canterbury'' were ■ honoured. Harmony was provided chiefly by Messrs W. Joll, Croft, and Phillips, and an instrumental trio. Hearty singing of patriotic choruses was a feature of the evening.

To close their winter session the Cambrian 'Society held a very successful vocal and instrumental concert at the Y.M.C.A. last Saturday night. The President (Mr G. Roberts and Vicepresident (Mr H. M. Williams) presided over a "full house." A long programme was submitted, which was highly enjoyed and received with greatest enthusiasm. . The proceedings commenced with the singing of "God Save the King,'' and the Welsh National Anthem, after which the Vice-president made topical reference to the war, and commented on the loyalty Wales had always shown to the British Crown. He felt sure in the present crisis there was no more loyal and gallant part of the Empire than the principality of Wales. Amongst the numerous items of the programme appeared the Sydenham Baptist choir, an orchestra party under the leadership of Mr W. Palmer, Mr Win. Jones the "Welsh tenor,'' and Mr R. Edwards. Cornet and violin solos were contributed by Messrs C Brown and Blyth, and a flute and clarionet duet was ably played by Messrs Dobbie and Wothers. Adinira-. able recitations were given by Miss N. Rogers anil Mr T. Adnams. The hearty singing of "God Bless the Prince of Wales" brought the proceedings to a close.
