From Canterbury's initial rush Watts got the ball during some loose play near the Hawke's Bay line, and was almost across when he passed out. The pass was not taken, and Hawke's Bay relieved. Canterbury returned and Smythe sent the ball out to Boon who just failed to get clean away. A minute later the same player was pushed out at the corner flag. Canterbury continued to attack, and after a warm skirmish Reid got over, but was recalled for a breach of the rules, and Hawke's Bay Were awarded a free kick, that enabled them to raise the persistent Canterbury attack. The Hawke's Bay players went straight up field and the Canterbury full-back, misfielding the ball, allowed them to get up to him before, he could rectify the error. He kicked but the ball,, went over the line, where Ellison pounced on it. Du Val converted' the try. Hawke 's Bay 5, Canterbury 0. From the restart Canterbury'again assumed, the offensive, and twice in quick succession their attacks were stopped right oiTihe Hawke's Bay line; Then Gasson marked, but Mitchell'oushot at goal went wide. Presently B.qon got the leather in the Hawke's Bay twenty-five, profiting by a missed pass of Du Val's, and got across the line just as he was tackled. Mitchell failed with the kick. Hawked Bay 5, Canterbury 3. A sharp attack by Hawke's Bay, followed by an equally fast Canterbury counter attack occupied some time after the restart, the teams then settling down to fight for a lengtliy •; spell at about midfield. For the greater part of the time the play was uneventful and uninteresting, the efforts' of both teams being unfinished and spasmodic. Finally Kruse picked up the leather, and beating three opponents, r,an.over and touched down behind the posts! Smythe converted.' Canterbury 8, Hawke's Bay 5. Immediately afterwards, during some fast play at half way, Kruse broke away from a tackle* and making ground, transferred the leather to Mitchell. The latter outran therdeld and scored. Smythe converted."' Canterbury 13, Hawke's Bay 5. Play-had not been more than five minutes in progress again before Canterbury .were at the Hawke's Bay line'. Second SpelL From'the kick-off in the second spell Canterbury attacked warmly,,and after several ineffective attempts to reach the Hawke fs Bay line were awarded a free kick! ~Smy%lie's shot went just outside the posts. A moment later Hawke's the result _of a fast forward rush on the part of Canterbury. The visitors, cleared from the re-start, and cut down-field in a nice passing rush that - terminated near the Canterbury lime.... A sqrum followed, and. Selby, getting the., ball from this, scored. Du Val's shot at goal went wide. Canterbury 16, Hawke Bay 8. Canterbury retaliated with a fast attack from the drop-out, and near>the Hawke's Bay line Watts took a. clever mark. Mitchell's kick, flew wide. Canterbury returned,' but a nice 1 mark by Kelly prevented trouble. The. ensuing • kick let Hawke's--Bay away, and for spme little time they kept Canterbury busy defending. ' Taylor was pulled down when almost across the line, and in the scramble that •; followed Canterbury cleared. They rushed straight up-field, and Smythe, when in the Hawke's Bay twenty five, kicked the ball over the line. He followed up fast and scored. He took the kick himself, but failed to convert. Canterbury 19, Hawke's Bay 8. A.long but unsuccessful attack by Hawke's Bay followed, and Canterbury had to put in a lot of hard play before they got back to the visitors' territory. Here a period of fast, loose play occurred before Reid snapped up the leather and dived across. The try was not converted. Canterbury 22, Hawke's Bay 8. The local team continued to attack, and from a scrum in the Hawke's Bay twenty-five King got the ball. He passed to Morris, and the latter got across. Smythe's kick at goal failed. Canterbury 25, Hawke's Bay 8. The game ended almost immediately after, with the scores: — Canterbury .. 25 Hawke's Bay 8 Referee: Mr D. McGregor. JUNIOR GRADE. In the semi-final for the junior championship Federal beat Sydenham by .13 points to 10. For the winners Bright, Worstfold, and Malloy scored tries, of which Fletcher converted two. Greatbatch and Clements scored for Sydenham, Greatbatch converting both tries. Referee: Mr Garrad.
