MANY DEATHS REPORTED,
DISASTROUS EARTHQUAKE.

By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. (Received July 28, 10.35 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 28. A tidal wave following on an earthquake, practically demolished Benkoelen. Seventeen Chinese and four natives were killed. Twenty were injured, including seven Europeans.
A Batavia messages states, that an immense earthquake destroyed the telegraph cables.
The steamer Kintuck is ashore on a coral reef.
All the passengers were saved. "j [On June 30 a cable message stated: "A cloudburst, following on the earthquake, devastated Benkoelen. In the j business quarter several institutions were destroyed. It is stated that the damage is 'incalculable. The damage j caused by the earthquake amounted to £BO,OOO. Benkoelen, or Benkulen, is a , residential seaport on the west coast of Sumatra, having a population of 1000. In 1714 a fortress called Fort Marlborough was built at Benkoelen, which was at that time under English rule. In 1824 the fort ceded to the Dutch in exchange for Malacca.]
