A NEW STEAMER.

■23? THE HORORATA. The New Zealand Shipping Company 's new steamer Hororata, which arrived at Adelaide on July 14, after a smart passage out from home, is the largest in that company's fleet, being [530 feet in length, and over 20,000 tons I displacement. She was built by Wm. Denny Bros., Dumbarton, and her engines are of the reciprocating type and •quadruple expansion. The steam is supplied by six single-ended Scotch boilers [working at a pressure of 2201b per square inch. Four of the six holds are insulated, giving stowage space for 120,000 sheep, and she has a double set of powerful refrigerating engines of the most up-to-date type. They are Messrs Haslam's, and are the ammonia type; the system of refrigerating in tire holds is the brine system. The wireless installation has the most recent improvements, and communication was established with Adelaide when 1510 miles off. There is also an emergency Marconi apparatus which has proved, itself equal to transmitting and receiving over a distance of 300 miles. The Hororata is fitted to carry some 1100 third-class passengers, and on board are to be found the most modern and up-to-date appliances for their comfort and safety. One notable feature of the ship is her handsome and spacious promenade decks. Two 4.7-inch guns and trained men to use them are carried, making the Hororata a self-defensive merchant vessel.
