PROFIT SHARING.

ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS' DEBATE Three members of the Wellington Accountant Students' Society and three of the Christchureh Society took part in a debate at the Caledonian Society's rooms last night, the subject set for debate being, * ' That the introduction of a general scheme of profit-sharing would be beneficial to the employers and employees of this Dominion." There was a large attendance of professional men, business men and students, and Mr J; S. Day presided. The affirmative was taken by the Wellington 'representatives, Messrs W. Appleton, H. A. Cunningham, and T. Anton. The Christchureh representa-. tives taking the negative. were Messrs W. Franklyn, G. M. Potinger, and A. J. Flannagan. The judge was Mr W. J. Hunter, M.A., L.L.B. The point made for the affirmative was that the increasing world-wide labour unrest showed the need for a reorganisation of the system, that the efficiency of labour was growing, and that the wage principle was inequitable. Under the present system the worker wanted the highest wages for the least amount of work, and the employer, wanted to pay as small a wage sible for a maximum of work. • P? 0 ?*" sharing, it was contended, would increase the worker's interest and make him'a better workman. The argument for the negative was that profit-sharing would result in speeding up and that the employee would prefer an immediate increase in wages rather than a chance of a 5 per cent, profit on their wages. The men preferred to be able to demand an increase of wages through their unions and profit-sharing was £H attempt to abolish, unionism. The Judge, in awarding the, Welling**, ton delegates tha said, that the: speeches had "been of a very high. OTder, and though. tonJiad got the decision on the reply of M> Appleton* lie-had no fault to findj witfi. any x>£ tie -speakers. >
