THE DAVIS CUP.
CANADA AND AUSTBALASIA.

In the Davis Cup preliminary tie between Australasia and Canada Wilding defeated Powell, .6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Brookes and Wilding easily defeated the Canadians —Schwengers and Powell —in the singles by three straight sets in each ease. The Canadians were complete.ly outclassed. Brookes played his match with the temperature at lOOdeg., but a cooling shower fell prior to Wilding's match. The : courts had been heavily covered with tarpaulins, and -were hot affected. Wilding's service, and returns w r ere marvellous, completely nonplussing Powell. Lack of confidence hastened Schwengers's defeat, although Brookes was his master at all stages of the game.
