A WHARF FATALITY.
LYTTELTON RESIDENT KILLED. CRUSHED BETWEEN TRUCES. ~ distressing accident took place at, Lyttelton about 8.45 last evening, as & - result -of which Mr James Eadie, aged one of the best known residents of Lyttelton, lost his life. _ Nobody actually saw the accident happen, though it may w easily be surmise* how it occurred. At the time shunting operations were being carried out on New 6 wharf in connection with the Kaiapoi Shipping Company's Kairaki,' and it i» supposed that Eadie was attempting- t» cross between two empty trucks and wa» practically sandwiched between the baft ' fers. The railway shunters knew nothing of the matter until, on going to hook ujh the waggons, they > found Eadie's bodjr - lying across the rails. »■* The unfortunate man was still alive and was immediately taken to th» casualty ward, where he was attended B> Drs Upham and Newell. His injuries were, however, so severe, that he died - about 20 minutes after admission. \ r Deceased was a married man, and has a grown-up family residing at Wanganui. He came, out to the Dominion in -1874 ' in" the New Zealand Shipping Co. 's sailings. t ship Eangitikei, and-was for many years '<• In the service of the' Railway retiring on superannuation some years ago. -He came to Lyttelton in January , last and .had been working with Mr ' W. Twomey, sailmakor. Only on Wednesday evening he was elected a manager of St; John's Presbyterian Church. r< . s An inquest will be held this afternoon. ,
