NEW BRIGHTON.
At the last householders' meeting for the election of a School Committee, Mr G. W. Stauiland suggested that a drum and fife band would be a useful •adjunct -to the school, and, following his suggestion, a small committee of residents was set up to collect the 'necessary funds. The residents responded'promptly and generously, and the committee held its final meeting in "the Fire Brigade Hall' On Tuesday night, when the hon. secretary (Mr A. W. Owles) reported that a sum of over '£29 had "been collected, the necessary drums and'fifes had been purchased, a band formed amongst the scholars, and there was a balance of over £lO in hand. It was decided that the fifes purchased should be the personal property of the boys now using them, and that the drums and the balance in hand should be handed oyer to the School Committee for the use of the school band, A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Stauiland who fathered the suggestion, and to Mr Owles, who acted as secretary, and the committee then disbanded.
