Carbajal was sworn in as President, and afterwards drove to the National Palace, where he was greeted with tumultuous cheering. AMERICAN SATISFACTION. WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS. WASHINGTON, July 16. The State Department hardly conceals its satisfaction at Huerta's rejection. It is expected that Carbajal will make satisfactory arrangements to hand over the office to the Constitutionalists when Carranza reaches th,e capital. The American forces 'will remain at Vera Cruz until a settlement is reached. ' GHASTLY ATROCITIES. PERSECUTION OF CATHOLICS. (Received July 16, 9.50 a.m.) VERA CRUZ, July 16. Refugees describe the ghastly persecution of Catholics by Villa's followers. They have been stripped, lashed, branded with hot irons, and otherwise mutilated. Six, who were hanged, were repeatedly cut down and revived for th'e amusement of drunken soldiers.
