Mr R. J. White, of Wellington, is staying at Warner's Hotel. Mr J. A. Flesher returned from the north this morning.
Mr J. Cluff, of Melbourne, is staying at the United Service Hotel. His Honour Mr Justice Denniston left for Wellington last evening to attend the sittings of the Court of Appeal. Father Lynch was amongst the passengers from Wellington by the ferry steamer this morning.
Major Grant and Dr. Evaxls left for the north by the ferry steamer last evening.
Amongst the visitors to Christchurch who are staying at the Clarendon Hotel are Messrs D. Bohan and J. N. Wallace, of Wellington. • The Revs. J. Cocker, Guy, Walker, Sturson, Martin, Harris, Patchett, Lawry, Williams, and Gray were passengers from the north by the ferry steamer this morning.
Mr James Anderson, city accountant, was presented with.a Bible this morning by the members of the City Treasury staff, on the occasion of his being sworn in as a Justice of the Peace.
A presentation of a case of pipes was made by members of the literary staff of the "New Zealand Times," Wellington, on Thursday, to Mr Baxter O'Neill, who has left that journal to join the staff of THE SUN. Mr O'Neill arrived from Wellington this morning. Amongst the new Justices of the Peace just appointed are Messrs G. A. Smyth and .James Anderson (Christchurch), John' Reynolds (Riccarton), A. L. Grav (Kaiapoi), James M. Marr (Waiau), *W. R. M'Laren, and John O'Rorlce (Timaru), and John Withell (Otipua).
Mr Cresswell, M.A., head master of the Rangiora High School, has been granted six months' leave of absence, during which time he is to be taken on trial as Assistant Inspector-General of Schools. Mr S. A. Clark, at present assistant master at the High School, has temporarily been appointed headmaster. Mr R. T. Souness, Inspector of Dairies in the Christchurch district, who is severing his connection with the Department of Agriculture, after about eight or nine vears' service, was presented by his fellow-officers in the Department " this morning with a fine gold albert and suitably inscribed pendant. The presentation was made by Mr J. W. Butters. Dr. Svdney Smith lias been appointed District Health Officer at Dunedin, in succession to Dr. Champtaloup, now professor of bacteriology at Otago University. Dr. Smith, who is a native of Otago, received his medical training in the Universities of New Zealand and Edinburgh. At Edinburgh he * was assistant to Professor H. Harvey Littlejohn, professor of forensic medicine. Dr. Smith qualified in 1912, and last year he secured the diploma in public health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
