The heavy southerly weather again delayed the Wahine on her run down from Wellington last night. It was 7.40 when she arrived at the moles, and after being berthed the special.steamer train left port about 8.15 a.m.—too late to connect with the first express. The committee of the Canterbury Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association, in its report to the annual .meeting last evening, recorded the death of Mr George Collins, a member of the association, taking the opportunity of recording the deep regret felt, and of extending sincere sympathy to Ms relatives in thier sad bereavement.

On Tuesday next, at 8 p.m., an organ and vocal recital will be given in St. Mary's Church, Merivale. The collection taken will be given towards the Open-air Home for Children Fund. Sacred solos will be sung by Miss Eay Livingstone, Messrs L. C. Barnes, and R. J. Hobbs, and anthems will also be rendered by the Merivale choir. Miss G. Dobson will play several organ solos. A meeting of the Sydenham School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, Mr R. Congreve in the chair; there were also present Mrs Hunt, Mrs Webb, and Messrs Marks, Cameron, Harley, Butterfield, Merriman, and Duncan. The headmaster-reported the number on the roll to be: —Boys 534, girls 512, total 1046. Average, 91 per cent. The question of forming a drum and fife band for the school was held over. Mrs Webb and Messrs Merriman and Marks were appointed a visiting committee for the month. Yesterday afternoon at the Boys' High School the Rev. E. Eliot-Cham-bers delivered a very interesting lecture on "The Royal Navy." Mr Bevan-Brown, headmaster, introduced the speaker, who dealt with the navy from his own days as a midshipman to the present time. The address was interspersed with anecdotes, and lantern slides, illustrating the various types of warships, views of life in the Navy, and a torpedo attack on a Dreadnought were also shown. Both masters and boys evinced great interest in the lecture, and it is anticipated that a strong junior branch of the NsV3* League will be formed at the school.

An outbreak of fire, which was checked before it could get under way to any extent, occurred about 9 o'clock last night in Inglis 's Bui klings at the corner of High and Cashel Streets. It originated in a lavatory adjoining the office of Mr F. Pratt, solicitor, apparently in some rubbish. A good deal of smoke arose, but the Fire Brigade, which was on the scene promptly, soon extinguished it with the chemical apparatus, no water being used at all. The damage done was mostly to the wooden partition, about £lO or £ls would probably cover the lot. Mr Pratt's office was undamaged. The buildings are owned by the HunterBrown Estate.

A knotty problem id perplexing the parishioners of St. John's Church, Woolston. The present church is gradually becoming a ruin; so badly damaged is it that parishioners talk of taking umbrellas into the church with them to protect their heads from falling plaster. Last evening a meeting of parishioners was held, under the chairmanship of Bishop Julius, to consider the position. Three proposals were put forward, one that a new church be built, at a cost of about £2OOO, another that a mission hall be erected in place of the present building, at a cost of about £750, and the third that the present building be repaired. Bishop Julius said that the parishioners might as well build a new church as repair the present rotten structure. A new church would be too heavy a millstone for the parish to bear, and he favoured the erection of a mission , hall. Eventually the meeting decided to leave the church as it. is until De-cember,-in order that the ladies might find out how. much money is contributed by means of the collecting boxes which are being circulated. Twenty-three applications have been received by the City Council for the position of manager of the showroom and consumers' department in connection with the supply of electricity. These applications will probably be considered at a meeting of the Electricity Committee on Monday afternoon. A meeting in connection with the open air home for children fund was held in Sydenham South yesterday afternoon. The inclemency of the weather mitigated against a large. attendance, but those, present were keenly interested in the addresses given by his Worship the Mayor, Sister Roehefort, and Mr Good. As a resident of Sydenham Mr Good made a strong appeal to the other residents to be prepared to sub-, scribe with the utmost generosity that their means would allow. Mrs Papprill was elected secretary of the committee which is to arrange for the canvassing of Sydenham and the collecting will begin very shortly.
