DECLINING BIRTH RATE.
ALARMING FIGURES FROM FRANCE.
EFFECT ON LABOUR MARKET.
"Times" and "Sydney Sun" Services. (Received June 27, 8 a.m.) PARIS, June 26
The alarming dec-line in the birthrate continues. Births in 1912 totalled only 745,539, the lowest on record. Jn less than forty years the birthrate has diminished by 200,000 annually. There were 13,169 fewer marriages celebrated in 1913, while divorces increased by 500, totalling 15,076. The decline in the birthrate coinciding with the industrial expansion has led to a serious dearth of labour.
A Bill has been introduced into the Chamber of Deputies imposing a tax on all 'foreign labour. It is, however, unlikely that it will pass because this labour is an absolute economic necessity.
