RUGBY.

WELLINGTON t. WAIRARAPA, Press Association. CARTERTON, June 20. Wairarapa met Wellington on Saturday in a howling southerly, and were defeated by 6 to 3. Wellington won the toss, and defended the southern goal with the wind and rain behind them. In spite of this, the Wairarapa forwards more than held their own, and continually pressed the ball. From a scramble in Wairarapa's twenty-five Taggart scored a try, which was not converted. There was no further score till half-time. In the second half, it was expected that Wairarapa would score vigorously, but the exertion" of the first half had palpably weakened them, and, though they pressed continuously, they could not score till about half through, when N. Johnson, in a forward rush, fell on the leather. jM'Kenzie failed in the attempt at goal. Wairarapa continued pressing, and Wellington accepted several forces. With a minute to go, the Wellington forwards broke away and carried the ball to Wairarapa's twenty-five. The ball was picked up wonderfully by Fa ire, who ran in and scored a try, which was not converted, and time, was called. The play throughout was I merely a mud scramble. ELLESMERE SUB-UNION.
