WELLINGTON, June 20,

Their Excellencies the Earl and Countess of Liverpool, with Captain Eastwood and Captain Hutton, aides-de-camp, arrived by the Moana on Friday evening, from their visit to the Islands.

Miss Dorothy Buckley., who has been on the nursing staff of the Christchuroh Hospital for the last four years, returned to Wellington last Thursday. Miss Lillian Hiorns, of Christchureh, left by the Tahiti on Friday for San Francisco. Her sister, Mrs Watkins, was also a passenger. Mr and Mrs Hobson, of Auckland, left by the Tainui for England, on a pleasure trip.. Miss Pearson, who has been on a visit to New Zealand, also travelled Home by the Tainui. Mrs Sliirtcliffe and her two daughters left for England on a six months' visit last Thursday. Mr E. Lee, for many years connected with our Education Board, and his daughter, Miss Cora Lee, left for' England in the Tongariro. ,Ml ss Amy Moss left on a pleasure trip by the same boat.

Mr and Mrs T. M. Wilford have returned from Ghristchureh. Miss Jean Beauchamp -left on Friday for Sydney, on a short visit. Mr and Mrs W. E. Cocks left by the Sydney boat last Friday. Mr Cocks was the popular seamen 's missioner here. Mrs Napier M'Lean has gone to Napier for a few weeks. Mrs Bruce Christie and Mrs E. A. Dawson left this week for Auckland. Miss Lily Logan is staying with her sister, Mrs Henry Hall. Mrs Andrew Hamilton has gone to Australia on a visit. Miss Gladys Smith is visiting her sister, Mrs Eglinton, at Palm«rston North. Mrs MacDiarmid, wife of Dr MacDiarmid, of Hawera, is visiting Wellington. The engagement is announced of Miss Grace Lane, daughter of Mrs Basil .Lane,, Marton,J&yigitikei, to, Mr E. Monckton, of Poverty Bay. Mr and Mrs< Sirrellby, of Hastings, and their six daughters, left by the Tahiti for America, en route to' England. Mr and Mrs Russell Gaisford have been visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs Wynyard, of Christchurch, have been staying here. Mrs Fitehett is arranging a dance in aid'of the proposed Plunket Home for babies. It is to take place at the Oriental Bay Kiosk on July 9.

At the Engineers' Institute ' last

night, a most enjoyable dance took place. The building had a most festive appearance, bright lights and gay bunt; ing being festooned right from the entrance, up the broad - stairway and to the ballroom. A string band provided music, and supper was arranged in the library, fresias and red berries decorating the tables. The committee in charge of the dance arrangements were Messrs J. Carswell, E. S. Pyke, F. Wallis, S. M'Leod, P. S. Marchant, and C. A. M'lntyre.

On Friday afternoon Mrs M'Naugliton Christie gave a very enjoyable '' at home'' at her residence, Murphy Street. Beautiful spring flowers decorated all the rooms, and a pleasant time was spent by the guests. Tea and coffee, with delicious cakes, were handed round by a number of the hostess's girl friends. Mrs Christie wore a gown of blue charmeuse, with lace and tiny buttons: Some of those present were: — Mrs Collins, Mrs F. M. B. Fisher, Mrs M'Tavish, Mrs Reid, Mrs F. Samuel, Mrs Cecil Jones and Miss Jones, the Misses Halse, Mrs H. Blundell, " Mrs Tringham, Mrs Bethune, Mrs Miles, Mrs Knox Gilmer, Mrs Dyer, Mrs Clay, Mrs Stott, Mrs and Miss Ewart, Mrs Tripp, Mrs Garnet Harty, Mrs Haire, Mrs and Miss Young, Mrs Donald Robertson, and Mrs P. Nathan.

Much interest was taken in the football match, North v. South Island, on Saturday. Despite the bitterly cold wind and rain, thousands of enthusiasts attended. His Excellency the Governor, attended by Captain Eastwood and Captain Hutton, were present, also the president of the Eugby Union, and Mrs G. P. C. Campbell. The Baillie collection of pictures is attracting much attention at present. At a private view last Friday a great many guests expressed their pleasure at the opportunity of seeing so many beautiful paintings. Some of those present were: —Mr and Mrs H. M. Gore, Miss Payne, Mr and Mrs Harcourt Turner, Mrs H. Crawford, Mrs and Miss Miles, Mr and Mrs Charles Wilson, Misses Newton, Mra Ernest Coleridge, Mrs Rankine Brown, and Mrs Hogben.

Mrs Colin Holmes has returned from Dunedin, and is staying with Mr and Mrs Holmes at Seatoun. Mrs Mason and Miss M'Andrew are staying at Caulfield House.
