AGAINST H. E; HOLLAND'S IMPRISONMENT.
At the quarterly meeting of the Canterbury Printers' Machinists and Bookbinders' Union' resolutions were passed calling upon the; Go^efnment release H. E.'Holland, .who is undergoing a term of .iriiprisonmerit Jor'. w seditiiOn> and., also protesting against .the,: continued imprisonment of the , men who were convicted on various., charges connected with last year's strike.; The meeting expressed the opinion that the law ; of sedition is obsolete, and that its 1 Venforce'm'ent is a serious reflection upon 'the liberty which is generally supposed to be associated with the British Constitution. The present system of/jury selection was also condemned . : .as.. giving-* the Police Department practically absolute power. The resolution on, this, matter also set out that the meeting '' considers the method of preparing jury lists and the right of- unlimited challenge on' the part of the Crown, as opposed to the prisoner's strictly limited right of challenge, as being a mere travesty of justice."
