FOR COUNTY ROADS.

GRANT SOUGHT.

: Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 20,

A deputation from the Franklin County Council interviewed Mr Massey in reference to the proposal to raise one large loau of from £50,000 to £OO,OOO to put the whole of the maiu roads of the county in order, the work to extend over three or four years. At present Franklin receives £20,000 in subsidies so that it would really be no increase.

Mr Massey: Do you suggest that in c&Se the Government agrees to this proposal you will not require any Parliamentary grants for the county?/ 'The reply was in the affirmative, except' in the event of extraordinary expenditure such as flood damages. Mr Massey said that the Government Loan Department was in funds and was able to lend the money. The proposal appealed to him in view of the condition that no Parliamentary grants would be asked for. The Government intended this session to deal with the whole question of Parliamentary grants and subsidies to local bodies.
