By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright, SYDNEY, June 18.
After thirty-six hours' battling with the storm, the Wakatipu returned to port, badly battered. Her rudder was broken, and her lifeboats and deck fittings smashed.
During the storm a baby was born on board.
The vessel had a trying experience. For six hours she was out of control, and wallowing in a tremendous sea. Great waves broke aboard, and much water found its way into the cabins and stokehold. Eventually the hand-gear was rigged and she beat her way back to port. ' v Sailing vessels which grounded in Newcastle Harbour are still aground. They, have been considerably damaged by the big sea running. Shipping is sheltering.
THE STORM ABATED. (Received June 19, 9.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 19. The gale has now subsided, but the rain continues.
