KILLED IN A FIGHT.
YOUTHS' FATAL QUARREL. A young man named William,... or David, Wells, lately employed at Willowbridge as a farm hand, died in the ■ Waimate Public Hospital at 4 o'clock 011 Saturday afternoon, through a blood-vessel on the surface of the brain being ruptured as the result of a' blow received in a quarrel. It is stated that while a young map belonging to Morven, W. Landers, was talking to a friend after supper Wells came up to him in the street and spoke to him, and a quarrel followed, which led to the use of fists- They adjourned, to the school grounds, .where the fight was continued for several minutes, in the presence of a considerable crowd. Landers, who seemed to be getting the worst of it, at last struck a blow which felled his opponent. When Wells did not. get up, somebody advised the crowd to go away, as tlie man would soon be all right, but when he showed no, sign of regaining consciousness Lander's friend got a taxi cab and took Wells to Dr. Hayes's surgery, where he was found, to be suffering from an injury to the brain, and he was taken to the hospital. Drs. Borrie and Hayes performed an operation at once, but without result, for the man died -without ever having regained consciousness.
Landers attended the Waimate Police Station on Saturday and gave himself into custody. He stated that there had been a fight, but no foul play. An inquest will be held.
