TURF TOPICS.
When the Canterbury Jockey Club decided to fix a maximum of 12.7 in the Grand National Steeplechase, there did not seem much chance of the proviso being brought into use this season. Should Peary win the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase on Wednesday, however, he is almost sure to get the limit in the big JJiccarton contest.
After winning the Maiden Hurdles at the Auckland meeting, Ruatangata changed hands, the sum mentioned being 300 sovs. He will in - future be trained by S. Jamieson at Awapuni. The Wellington horseman, H. Lowe, who used to ride for Mr Bidwill's stable, is now in Sydney and has been granted a jockey's license by the Australian Jockey Club. Some weeks ago Mr W. Hall, secretary of the Wanganui Jockey Club, paid a visit to Sydney in the interest of his health, which was much improved by the change. Last week Mr Hall had to enter a private hospital to undergo a slight operation. His many friends will be pleased to learn that he is now making good progress towards recovery. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club will be represented at the Racing Conference next month by the Hon. J. D. Ormond and Mr Geo. Hunter, M.P. The jumper Julian was shipped to Sydney on Friday last. At Randwick he will join Forest Prince and Captain Jingle, and with this trio J. Hennah will have a useful team for the winter racing season. On the day after the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting the whole of the thoroughbreds running on Te Mahanga Station will be submitted to auction. Amongst them will be the wellknown stallion San Fran, the sire of many good racehorses. Reports from the north speak very favourably of Silver King's prospects as a hurdler. The big son of Sylvia Park and Ruby has given his mentor, A. Ellingham, a lot of trouble in the past, but he is now apparently quite sound again. Should Peary win the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase he will emulate the deeds of Moifaa, who annexed that event after scoring in the Great Northern Steeplechase.
Dinner Gong, a half-sister to Bandeira, has been recommissioned at Hastings. Prior to breaking down last season the Boniform filly showed great promise, and it is to be hoped that she will stand training. The death is reported from Longlands of Mr E. J. Watts' well-known brood mare Kilindini, as the result of internal haemorrhage. During her racing career she showed fair form as a three-year-old, winning five events out of 19 starts. On being relegated to the stud she produced Mombassa to All Black, and was in foal again to the same horse at the time of her death. The Hawke's Bay trainer T. Quinlivan has started to sprint his rising two-year-olds, and they all shape well, especially the sister to Moulu and Bunting (All Black —Red Plume). The Maltster filly, says an exchange, has joined the active brigade again. Los Vegas, in the same stable, is to be turned out for a spell; likewise the brother to i Sauci. TEMPLAR.
