CRICKET MATTERS.
SOUTH AUSTRALIANS NOT COMING. * - •. v South Australia V cricket representatives will not visit New Zealand during the- next cricket seaspm. When the New Zealand 1 cricket team was m Adelaide a few' months agOj the- manager, Mr S. A._. Orchard, interviewed the South Australian, cricket authorities, and there' seemed to> lie- good prospects of that State sending a team to> the Do<minion* next season.. Consequently the New Zealand Cricket Council sent aa invitation to* South Australia, but other engagements prevent the acceptance of it. .
The- South Australian) Cricket Assor cJation's rej>ly was read at a meetiiug of the management committee- of the New Zealand Cricket Council last evening,, at which.there- we?e present Messrs S. A. Orchard (in the- chair),, J.. F. Peake, E. «L Austin,, and F. C Raphael (hom. secretary). It ran as follows, the letter being from the secretary of the South Australian Association:— *•' I have to advise that your communication of April 24 has been placed before my committee, and I am instructed to. thank your council for the invitation,, which is much appreciated, for a team from this State to play a series of matches in New Zealand during the season 1914-15. -
1 ' My association very muek regrets,, however, that owing to matches in South Africa and other inter-State fixtures, which will take a number of our players for a considerable period, they will not be able to send a team to New Zealand this coming season./'' Regret was expressed that the visit could not be made, but it was pointed out -that Queensland and Fiji each desire to send a team to the Dominion next season, and that there is also a possibility of the Melbourne Cricket Association sending a team. However, the matter of proceeding further with arrangements for a visit from ah oversens team was left over until the next meeting of the committee, as it was considered that it should be dealt with when there is a larger attendance than there was last evening. With regard to the balance-sheet for the .New Zealand team's tour in 'Australia, the Wellington Cricket Association's committee wrote that it considered the council's reply to the Wellington Association's previous letter was unsatisfactory, iu that it did not supply the information asked for. The letter waa " received.'' i. e ! e< i\ etai £ WllS instructed to- write to Mr Arthur Sims, expressing the council s appreciation of the calibre of the team winch he brought over from Austialia recently, and the good effect the tour had on New Zealand cricket, and congratulating him on the success of the tour. A motion of condolence with Mr J-„ F. Peake,.who has. suffered bereavement"bv theTleath of his mother, was passed by the committee.
