The Hon. T. Fergus arrived froift Wellington by the Wahine to-day. Mr C. H. Ensor, president of th§ Farmers' Union, returned to White Rock to-dtfy. '__ Mr T. W- Whitson, late of the Union Company, arrived from Wellington by the Wahine and left for Dunedin by th 4 first express.The Rev. J. D. Jones, the well-known English Congregational preacher, is about to visit' New Zealand. He is to spend a few days in Christchurch towards the end of next month.
Colonel V. S. Smyth, Officer Command* ing tHe Canterbury Military District, has returned from Blenheim, where he was present at the inspection of the MarN borough Senior Cadets by General Sir lan Hamilton. Colonel, Smyth and Mrfl Smyth and family will leave by the Ruahine, sailing from Wellington next Thurß : day, for England.
Mr S. Saunders will retire from th& " editorship of the 'fLyttelton Times" on June 13, after having held that position •- for 23 years, since the retiring of Mr W. P. Reeves. Mr M. L. ■ Reading replaced Mr Saunders. Mr Edward Saunders, who has been associate editor for the past «• five years, now assumes the position o£ chief of staff.
Yesterday evening, at,the Sydenham police station, Mrs Baird, the wife of Constable W. • R. Baird, was presented ' "" -. with' a colonial travelling rug and a. cheque for the children. In making the presentation, Mr G. E. Good said ' that the gift was a small token of re». - spect from a number of the Sydenham- ' people to Constable Baird and his fam~ iiy, on the "occasion of his leaving the district to promotion on the West Coast, after many years' service in Sydenham.
