MEETING OF A.S.A. COUNCIL. A meeting of the Council of the : -New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last evening, there being present: —Messrs F. Bowler:. (Canterbury), H. S. Williams (Auckland), H, M'D. Vincent (Hawke's Bay), C. 0:' Bryant (Wanganui), J. B. Buchanan (Nelson), F. C. Fantham (Westlaud), G, .Ricli (South Canterbury), and P. N. Bundle (Otago), hon. -secretary. The report of the certificate sub-com-mittee stated that, disregarding the Wellington and Otago returns which had yet to come in, 1100 proficiency certificates had been issued. Owing to the illness of the president, Mr G. Harris, the certificates,:, though ready to. be r issued, hact beexi held back. The committee expressed its gratification at the performances of first-year applicants. — The report was adopted. The committee appointed to deal with the allocation to the various centres of the Government grant for life-saving, reported that exception had been taken to certain items on the balance-sheets of the Auckland, Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Wanganui, Canterbury, and Otago centres on the ground that the expenditure had been applied to grants outside the Dominion.—lt was decided to request aii explanation from the centres concerned. The committee appointed, to arrange carnivals in connection with the visit of Duke Kahananiaku recommended that an agreement be entered into with the. The : committee proposed that the tour should be under the control of the N.Z.A.S.A., which should appoint a" manager to conduct the visitors. The recommendations were agreed to. - ■ The following provincial itinerary was submitted:—Arrive Bluff, Monday,; Dunedin, Tuesday and Wednesday; Timarn, Thursday; Christchurch, Monday and Tuesday; Westport, Saturday and Monday; Nelson, Wednesday and Thursday; Wellington, Saturday: Wanganui, Wednesday and Thursday; Wellington, Saturday; Napier, Wednesday and Thursday; Auckland, Tuesday anil Wednesday; the tour to occupy about five weeks.
The Auckland Centre wrote with regard to the conduct of its affairs by its secretary, Mr J. Mulvihill, and explain 'irig the action taken to clear the centre. Mr Mulvihill had been declared a professional and suspended for life. As secretary of the Waitemata Club he had rendered members of the club liable to suspension as professionals. —The report was received, and it was resolved to send the centre a letter congratulating it on successfully cleaning up its affairs. ' «" ' With regard to the members of the Waitemata Club having competed at Napier under conditions infringing . the amateur status, and so rendering themselves"" liable to suspension, the sub-com-mittee of the council reported having recommended the Hawke's Bay Centre not to pay over any money to the members of the Waitemata Club, and also recommended that those members be reinstated. —The report was adopted. The N.S.W. Amateur Swimming Association wrote with regard to the visit of a team of swimmers to Auckland during March, pointing out that it was necessary for the N.S.W. Association to give its sanction to such tours, and that application should be made in writing, giving full particulars. —The letter was received, and it was agreed to adopt the procedure in arranging visits in future. The Auckland Association was given permission to negotiate through the N.Z.A.S.A. for a visit from Australian swimmers during the coming season.
The reinstatement, of W. R. Cox and C. Richardson was agreed to. The Greymouth and .Dnnedin Ladies' Clubs were affiliated to the association. RULES ALTERED. The -council held a special meeting to consider proposed alterations to the rules. Mr H. -M'D. Vincent, seconded by Mr V. C. Fantham, moved the deletion of the word "committee" from rule 2 (centres), section C, J, K. N, O; also rule .'> (council and officers), section P. The mover stated that at last meeting there had been a difference of opinion as to whether the words "centre" and ''centre committee" were identical in meaning, and he wished the point to-be made clear. Mr G. Rich, in wishing to move an amendment "making it permissible for a c'.elegato to sit on the council and a centre at the same time, was ruled out of cj-'er by the chairman, who stated that such an amendment providing for a direct alteration of the constitution, required notice of motion. After discussion Mr Rich moved an amendment that the word "committee" should be deleted from rule 2, sections C, J, K, N, O, only, but the amendment was lost, and Mr Vincent's motion carried b'v (> votes to 3.
