AGAINST CONSUMPTION.

HELPING THE CHILDREN. The executive committee which has been set up to carry on. arrangements with regard to the establishment of an open-air home for children met yesterday afternoon in the City Council Chambers. There were present: —His Worship the Mayor (Mr 11. Holland), in the chair, Dr P. C. Fenwick, the Kev. F. Rule, Messrs P. Hallenstein, C. T. Aschman, F. J. Bond, D. Hamber, J. A. Flesher, and Mesdames Humphreys and Fountain, and Sister Rochfort. The chairman reported having received a letter from Dr Fenwick suggesting that the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board should be written to officially with a view to seeing whether the board would take charge of the funds raised, and would take charge of and maintain the homes when established. The chairman of the board had said that this would be done, but it was suggested that when the time came he might not be able to bind the board to that action.

It was decided to write to the board, as suggested. The idea of a concert to aid the funds was discussed.

Mr Hallenstein suggested a general appeal to the citizens, signed by the Mayor. After discussion, Mr Aschman moved that committees should be formed in each suburban district to collect Subscriptions. "\ This was seconded by Dr Fenwick and adopted. On the motion of Mr Hallenstein, the resolution was extended by adding to it recommendations to the General Centre that it should make an appeal through the newspapers, to set up sub-committees to arrange for canvass of the city and suburbs, amusements and entertainments, - and the setting up of country committees. The following committees "were set up, with power to add to their numbers:—

Entertainment: Mesdames Humphreys, Speight, Harvey, and Misses Old, Stoddart, and Meadows. To deal with schools: Mesdames M'Clennan, O'Loughlin, Fountain, and Misses Falconer, Lloyd, Crump, and Geaney. To deal, with business houses, factories, and hotels: Mesdames Richmond, Baker, and M'Clennan, and Sister Rochfort. To deal with suburbs:, Mesdames O'Loughlin and Fountain, and Misses Old and Falconer. .

Country Committee: Mesdames Dix and Hamber, and Misses Meadows, Fleming, and Sister Rochfort. Messrs Board and Aschman were appointed a sub-committee, to act in conjunction with Mesdames Humphreys and Fountain and Sister Rochfort, in suggesting the addition of gentlemen to these committees.

It was decided to send an appeal to local bodies and friendly societies "asking for contributions. Mrs A. G. Townend, per Mr A. A. M'Kellar, a cheque for £5 5/-, which amount she intends to give annually. Mr J. A. Fleslier was elected chairman, to a#t the Mayor. -£C ';* f: - ■■■,', ; : : ;;

The Mayor undertook''to prepare the appeal to the ''public for funds.' A meeting of the -General Committee was called for Tuesday next. MEETING AT NEW BRIGHTON. A COMMITTEE FORMED. A meeting to further the Children's Home project was held at New Brighton last evening, the Mayor (Mr C. H. Winny) presiding over a large attendance. The object of the proposed Home was explained by the Mayor, Mr C. H. Qpie, and Sister Rochfort, who expressed regret at the absence of Dr Blaekmore. The disease commenced chiefly with children, and in helping on this preventive scheme they were doing very good work indeed. Dr. Stevens condemned overcrowding in schools, and commended the work of the school committees in trying to prevent it. After a lengthy discussion, in which the scheme was warmly commended, it was decided to appoint the following committee:— Mesdames Stanilahd, Hamber, D. Hill, Eastwood, Misses Gilmour, Musgrave, the Mayor (Mr C. H. Winny), Dr Stevens, Captain Owles, Messrs' C. H. Opie, G. W. Bishop, J. Ainger, J. Ashley, C. Israelson, W. Graham, and D. Hamber. Mrs D. Hill was appointed secretary pro tern. The Mayor placed the Borough Council Chambers at the disposal of the committee, the first, meeting Of .which will be held on Wedjiesday next; The Mayor was elected .president) and Mr C. 11.
