A RENOWNED SCIENTIST.
TO VISIT CHRISTCHURCH. One of thfe most interesting personalities among the group of scientists who will be visiting New Zealand in August and September next is Professors W. M. Davis, Professor of Geology in the Harvard University, U.S.A. Professor Davis has had wide experience in various parts of the world, and is one of the greatest authorities in the world in his particular branch of scientific investigation. He is a prominent advocate of the efficiency of glaciers as erosive agents —in fact,"he is the head of that particular school which credits glaciers with being the most potent agent of excavation, in contradistinction to the school which utterly opposes the theory of the erosive action of glaciers. He. had done work in this connection in the sounds of Alaska and British Columbia, and he has also visited Norway and the West of Scotland on similar missions. He will be able to study land features here in the light of his, observations in the Northern Hemisphere, and his visit cannot but be of the greatest importance to geological research. Professor Davis is described as a most charming lecturer, and lie has a wonderful facility in illustrating his lectures by drawings. In all probability Professor Davis will stay some time in New Zealand, and he will find that the South Island presents an excellent field for the study of glacial action. His visit should have a very stimulating effect on the work which is being done in New Zealand.
