THE FRUIT HAWKER. To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —The City Council in its wisdom lias abolished the fruit hawker, "presumably at the instance of the shop- - keeper who objected to the competition of men with no rent to pay. To my thinking the council should have resisted the .influence of the fruiterers. The hawker has as much right to liA'e as the shopkeeper. The. public should also be considered. Since the advent of the barrows, people have beeu able to get cheaper and better fruit. Also, they could see what they were buying. Usually, when you 'go into a shop tomake a purchase on the strength of the window display, you get something out of a case at the back, and it seldom comes up *to sample. But when you. buy from the barrow you know what you are getting.—l am, etc.,

MUNICIPAL POLITICS. To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —The citizens of Christchurch oru April 29 will determine as to who AvilL occupy the Mayoral chair for the ensuing year, and the electors of St Albans Ward Avill have the responsibility of selecting three councillors. Writing: as one avlio has taken some little interest in municipal matters, will you allow me through the courtesy of your Avidely read journal to make an appeal to my felloAV citizens who so far have neglected the very important duty of having their names inserted on the; roll, to do so without further delay.

It is now understood that there wilL be a contest for the mayoralty, and probably ten candidates for the St Albans vacancies. Municipal politics are in some respects quite as important as general politics, so that.it makes it really hard to find an excuse for the indifference shown by so many to matters which vitally affect the welfare of our city. My purpose is not to suggest, who should or who should, not. be elected, but rather to point out that those who may be victors should be returned on,A roll that may be fairly said tocontain the names of the bulk of thosewho possess the necessary qualification-^ Experience shows that in the past at nearly every booth electors have attended only to find that they had. neglected the simple matter of filling upa claim to vote form. After Wednesday, the roll closes; hence the need of prompt action.—l am, etc., A. D. HASSALL, President St Albans . Burgesses *" Association. St Albans, April 9.
