COUNTY COUNCILS.

HEATHCOTE. f ORDINARY MEETING. At last night's meeting of the Heathcote Borough Council tihere were present Messrs G. Scott (in the ehaii'), C. Flavell, F. Anderson, E. Mulcock, G. K. Burton, F. Bray, B. Armstrong, and" Col. E. Richardson. The report of the Finance Committee, which was adopted, showed that the debit at the bank was £2616 14/4. The Roading Loan had a debit of £4426 17/-. Since the meeting of the committee £3OO worth of debentures had been sold at £9B 5/-. The sewage and water loan was in credit £4894 3/-. Accounts amounting to £2337 9/10 were passed for payment. A grant of £2O w r as made to the Christcliurch Technical College. The chairman stated that in view of the council's finance he had thought it advisable to give several of the men notice that their employment should be terminated. The work on the Cashmere Hills had exceeded estimates, and it seemed that the drainage work would also be above the estimated amount. The engineer's report set out that of the valley roads, St Martins had been formed so far as suitable spoils had been available from the tramway excavations. Two additional culverts had been put in on the Hills Road', and one on Albert Terrace. The river road from Wilsons Road, Brensbrai Road, had been made up with tramway spoil. The extension to Wilson's Bridge had been completed, and the whole work was being, executed. The chanelling of Hills Road would be completed in a fortnight. Other improvements in Garland's Road, Nawford Street, and Beckford Road, York Street, and Hornbrook Street were also reported. The drains in Hillsborough had beqn cleaned, and as soon as they were finished the St Martins drains would be dealt with.. - It warf reported that the sewer lines on Hadcthorne-sßoad were within a few chains of the terminal. Except so far as Hawford and Beskford streets were concerned, the report was adopted. ' Mr Pannett waited upon the council with regard, to the new road through Professor Macmillan Brown's property. He suggested that the work could be, done more quiclcly by contract;_lie drew, attention to this matter, as it had to be' done before the winter. It was decided to refer a letter asking whether two drains might be connected by one line of pipes to the main sewer to the Christchurc-h Drainage Board. It was decided that tenders should be called for the construction of an extension of Macmillan Avenue from Whisbv Road to Hacktliorne Road, the extension road to be 20ft in width. It was decided that a gang should be put to work to push on with the sewer on the east side of Hacktliorne Road.

EYRE. The Eyre County Council held its monthly meeting yesterday; present — Mr R. Evans (in the chair), Mr F. G. Horrell, Mr C. Williams. The surveyor reported tjiat the protective at Waimakariri was completed, and suggested that the council pay a visit of inspection. The Railway Departent notified the completion of agreements in reference to the cleaning of Ivaikanui Creek. A letter was received from the Rev. C. A. Fraer thanking the council for the remission of rates on the Ohoka Maori College. The chairman (Mr R. Evans) and Mr I. Wright were reappointed to the board of management of the Kaiapoi Technical classes. The South Waimakariri River Board wrote disclaiming any responsibility for thei removal of growth of willows at Empire Bridge, and urged the council to remove the obstruction. —Held over

A letter was received from the Rangiox : a County Council, approving of the erection of a traffic bridge at Perrins ford,"and stating that the matter would be considered when framing new estimates. A special Vote of thanks was passed to Mr Jolxix Sims for the offer of a qixaixtity of chains and wire cable, for use at the Waimakarari works, which 'was! gratefully accepted. The assessor. for J the board appointed at the Valuation Court was Mr Thos. Hassell. It was decided to advertise for" land suitable for workers' dwellings. The Eyre County Council held a special meeting on Monday, and it was resolved that the present representation on the council be adhered to.
