A BIG SAL-. PRICES FIRM.

The sale at the Metropolitan markets to-day was very little smaller than the big yardings usually expected in March. The yarding of stores was only slightly below last week. Fat lambs and fat sheep were about the same as last week. STORE SHEEP. The shipping of sheep from the North Island still goes on, and the number of ewes from oversea formed quite a large proportion of the entry. Despite the fact that the season is advancing; there is an insistent demand for good lines of ewes, and a good deal of attention is being paid to store lambs, the demand to-day for these being slightly keener than usual. For all classes of sheep in this division the prices were quite on a par with last week's rates. The range of values was as follow;s: — Good rape lambs 14/- to 14/9. Extra good rape lambs 15/- to 15/9. Medium rape lambs 12/- to 13/6. Cull lambs 5/6 to 9/-. Good two-tooth ewes 19/9 to 20/1. Small two-tooth ewes, 16/1 to 17/7. Four and six-tooth ewes 19/- to 22/-. Good two, four, six, and eight-tooth ewes 20/1 to 24/6. Poorer sorts 15/2 to 19/-. Good sound-mouth ewes 16/6 to 19/6. Failing-mouth ewes .11/10 to 15/-. Aged and cull ewes 6/3 to 10/-. FAT LAMBS. It, was late in the day before the last trucks of lambs were emptied, and the yarding was one of the biggest of the seasou. The quality was well up to previous sales; in fact, the proportion of prime stuff was rather better than at the last sale or sO. With the advancement of the., season growers cannot be so particular as to the quality of their drafts. A line of Down cross lambs submitted on behalf of Mr Geo. Gardner, of Medbury, which were all prize-winners at the Hawarden Show on Friday last, brought good values. The champion pen of three tegs *26/-, the seconds 22/-, 6 brought 530/-, 14 brought 19/9, and 5 brought 19/3, the line averaging 20/7. In view of the holidays, ,the butchers were operating to some extent for choice quality lambs. The yarding of fat cattle was bigger than usual, and the quality was better than has obtained for some time. Beef has not been at all brisk of late, and the demand was irregular. Some 365 head were yarded, as against 271 last week. Some extra quality bullocks was yarded by Mr D. Rutherford, and sold up to 32/- per iOOlb. Price per lb, 5d to 5-] d. Porkers, heavy 42/- to 45/-. Porkers, light 36/- to 40/-. Price per lb, 6d to 6{d. In the store pens the yarding was also good, and prices were a little weaker. Values were as follow: — Large stores 36/6 to 44/-. Medium 29/6 to 35/-. Small 22/- to 29/-. Weaners .10/- to 15/-.
