INDUSTRIES WEEK.
SUGGESTED ABANDONMENT. '' Industries' Week seemed to have served its usefulness and some substitute was evidently necessary," said Mr J. B. Laurenson at last night's annual meeting of the Canterbury Industrial Association. "As you are aware," he ly successful last year owing doubtless to the fact that the date rather interfered with retailers' arrangements regarding their autumn displays. It ib felt that a special word of thanks should should be tendered to those who k cheerfully gave time and space to necessary displays, and also to the newspapers for their keen interest and sup- ' Personally I cannot help thinking that industries week should give place to something of a more novel and interesting character. '' I would like the incoming committee to consider the 1 holding of a Mardi Gras instead of industries week. This can be run on the lines of a street fair, which is such a successful feature in some U.S. cities. I believe that Christchurch lends itself admirably to such a i fixture, and it would be successful from every point of view." Mr Hercus said that as. one of those who had been connected with the working of the scheme in past years, he would suggest that it would be a pity to discontinue the industries week. It tJcept before the public the fact that local industries were flourishing. "When business was good, then was the time to advertise and the show would tend to prevent any subsequent slump. ■ It would be a pity to let it go-by default. -Speaking as a -member of the association, he thought that the public would be disappointed if the vscheme were not continued in some shape or form. It should be held Boon, if at all. Mr Laurenson explained -that a suggestion which he entertained with regard to a Madri Gras Festival could not be pu,t into operation this year. Such a celebration would have to be held in the early autumn, and it would .fake about sixteen weeks to work up. It would, of course, include an industrial display as well as a carnival. It was moved that a committee consisting of the members present should be split up to deal with the different trades. They. could arrange amongst themselves as to what individual indus*- ' tries they should attend to. Initial arrangements were left in the hands of the chairman and secretary.
