"TECHNICAL COLLEGE GROUNDS. The official opening of the playing fields at the Girls' Hostel, in Ensor's Road, Opawa, will take place to-mor-row afterntfon on the grounds, after which a hbckey carnival will be held. The ceremony will be performed by Mr G. Scot ( t, chairman of the Board of Governors, and Mr W. J. Dobbs, president of the Past and Senior Students' Association of the Technical College, will occupy the chair. The total playing area is about eight acres, and this already has been laid > down in grass, after having been levelled and prepared at the Board's expense. Three hockey grounds have been marked out, and will all be used to-morrow afternoon, but there is still room for a full-sized football ground, several tennis courts, and a running track of 120 yards length. All this week preparations have been going on for the carnival, and the programme is as follows: —Opening ceremony at half-past two o'clock; first spell of hockey games—Technical College Ladies' team v. Ngaio Ladies' team; Technical Boys' third grade v. fourth grade, in a fancy-dress match; Christchurch v. Bible Class; second spell —Technical Ladies v. Gentlemen of Students' Association; Day School match hockey team v. football team; a display of Swedish drill will be given by a squad of girls from the day school at 8.15 p.m., and afternoon tea will be served on the tennis court in front of the hostel. The chief object of the carnival is to establish a nucleus of a fund for the erection of a pavilion and dressingrooms for the players who will use the grounds. The Board of Governors have spent over £4OO in preparing this ground, and the Students' Association have recognised this fact, and have decided upon undertaking the task of erecting the pavilion. It is understood m that it will cost from between £l5O to £2OO.
