COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIKARI. The monthly meeting of the Waikari County Council was attended by Mr Rutherford (chairman) and Crs W. W. M'Rae and F. W. Pannett. The district railway engineer wrote that, as the land at 19 miles' 6 Cheviot branch, was handed over for road purposes, he was of opinion that »the council should bear the cost of shifting the fence to the new boundary, the , estimated cost of -which was £lO, aaid upon receipt of that amount he would have the work put in hand at once. , It was decided that, as Mr Overton has agreed to do all the necessary work in regard to this deviation,- the matter be referred to him. Mrs G. H. Goldien wrote eomplaining of the state of the water channel opposite her house at Waipara. —To be attended to. - Mr G. G. Newton'and Mr J. K. Forrester forwarded cheques to the amount of £SO, their contribution to the proposed bridge at Bentley's Road crossing. It was decided to accept the tender of the Kaiapoi Shipping Company for the delivery of the timber for the bridge, the work to be started as soon as the timber arrived. Sir George Clifford wrote regarding transfer of closed roads as arranged, also drawing attention to the necessity of shingling parts of the Stonyhurst Road.—lt was decided to look into the matter of the road transfer, and that the shingling of the Stonyhurst Road be included in the present year's estimates.

Mr GV Campbell, Davaar, wrote asking why it had taken the council six months to find out it had not sufficient funds to carry out the work asked for by him. He asked that either the work be done or an answer given why it could not be done. —It was decided to reply that the council could not entertarn. a proposal to expend money on a private road, and in regard to the work on the extension of Greig's Eoad the council /could only reiterate that no funds were available for this work.

Mr L. H. Campbell, Happy Valley, wrote regarding removal of the permanent man from the Happy Valley Road. —lt was decided to inform Mr Campbell that the man was only being removed temporarily, to .do some necessary work, and that before winter sets in lie would be again working on. the Happy Valley Road. The secretary of the Rangiora Higlj School' Wrote that his board proposed to engage the services of a competent wool classer to supervise the wool sorting classes under its control.

Mr G. D. Greenwood asked that the bridge on the Beach Road leading through his property be renewed. —It was decided that the chairman visit the. locality and inspect the work applied for. ' It was decided to procure poisoned ■wheat before the winter commenced, also that no birds' eggs or heads be purchased after April 30, until further Bf>tixse.

Mr J. O'Carroli wrote regarding the bridging of the water course on M Donald Downs Itoad.—lt was decided to plaee the cost ftf the bridge on the estimates for the year.

T&e district, health officer wrote regarding a nuisance existing' in. Princes Btueet, Waikanij caused by a drain, and asfteii: that the neeessary steps be taken

to abate it. —Cr Pannett gaye notice that he -would, move at next meeting that the sanitary inspection of the county be handed over to the Department'of Publie Health. Mr Pannett reported meeting the district railway engineer at the crossing of the Omihi "Road, where Mr Foster's trees obstructed the view, and that a satisfactory arrangement regarding the matter had been arrived at. tThe chairman reported that he had inet railway inspector Sanders at the viaduct, and it had been decided to plant willows at the foot of the washout there, and to widen the creek. Mr Douglas had given permission for the council's men to enter upon his property to carry out the work. ' It was decided to advise Mv Doak Ithat the council had seen Mr Greenwood |regarding- the boundary line of land at Reece's Road required for shingle pit, and that Mr Greenwood would offef no objection to the council purchasing it from hiit). -
