THE CUSTOMS FRAUD.

ACTION AGAINST IMPORTING FIRM. Writs have been issued by the Christchurch Supreme Court at the instigation of the Customs Department, against Barlow Bros., a well-known firm of merchants, *who until recently conducted a large wholesale business in tobacco, etc., in Christchureh. The writs have been issued to claim duty which the defendant alleges is due to it, the duty not having been paid through the alleged action of one of the firm's employees, who was concerned in the Customs' frauds recently investigated. The employee said to be implicated has left Christchureh, but the Department holds that the firm is liable for the amount of duty unpaid, even although it was not aware of its employee's actions.
